Year 5

Welcome to our Year 5 Page

We will keep you up to date with what is happening in your child’s year group in this section. Details of their topics, class trips, wow days and class based activities can be found here.

Summer 2018: Amazon Adventure

Our topic for the summer term is called ‘Amazon Adventure’. The topic begins with an exciting, multi-sensory experience as the children touch down in the depths of the Amazon rainforest where they have to navigate their way to safety.  Once back in the classroom, the children will be exploring various aspects of life in the Brazilian rainforest, from the animals that live there to the impact of deforestation.  The children are given the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a different culture, finding both the differences and similarities with that of their own.

Spring 2018: Smashing Saxons
Our topic for the Spring term is “Smashing Saxons”.  Throughout the topic the children will create museum exhibition pieces. The learning will be highly collaborative and led by the children, who will work in ‘Kingdom groups’.  This will be shared with you at an ‘exhibition’ on Wednesday 28th March.  There will be a short presentation at the beginning and then you will have the chance to listen to your children speak about their models, artefacts, manuscripts and some of the other interesting things they have found out!  The topic will also culminate with a special visit from a Saxon visitor!

Assembly: Wednesday 28th March

WOW Day: Tuesday 27th March

Our Topic this term is: Majestic Monarchs

Our topic for the Autumn term is “Majestic Monarchs”.  The topic starts with the children participating in their own version of the Battle of Bosworth, which started the Tudor reign.  The children will then develop a strong understanding of the Tudor kings and queens, their influence on Britain at the time and their legacy. The children will study the decisions and changes made by the Tudor monarchs relating to religion, healthcare, social hierarchies and punishment.

In the second part of the term, we will be taking part in a Tudor Murder Mystery!  The children will create a historical journal as a Tudor character exploring each monarch and the influential decisions they made during their reign and their effect on Britain. They will include various forms of writing including diaries, letters, information leaflets and instructions.

The second half term also includes a trip to Hever Castle – childhood home of Anne Boleyn – and culminates in a Tudor day, in which the children will participate in a range of Tudor activities.

Trip: Hever Castle – 17th November 2017
