Magical, Marvellous Me! - Autumn Term 2023

Welcome to the exciting world of Reception! The Autumn term is extremely important in getting to know the children. Therefore, our first topic is called Magical Marvellous Me, where they will share their beautiful treasure boxes with the rest of the class. During this topic, we will begin to build friendships and understand what a good friend is. We will discuss our feelings; get to know the classroom routines and expectations and learn how to stay healthy. Once settled, the children will start to learn their phonic sounds and will develop their counting skills. Leading up to Christmas, the children will have an opportunity to star in their own Nativity play!

The Enchanted Forest - Spring Term 2024

In the Spring Term, we will enter The Enchanted Forest - a magical place full of fun and wonder!

We encourage the children to explore their imagination by looking at well-known texts and traditional tales.

We explore and use these in role-play, literacy and creative art activities. We will promote communication and language through the retelling of stories, learning to recite key parts and using key vocabulary related to size and measure in maths.

We will learn about woodland animals, and what they need to survive and compare the past and present along with our map reading skills when we create and read maps of The Enchanted Forest.

Jaws, Paws, and Claws - Summer Term 2024

Welcome to the summer term in Reception, where our topic will be Jaws, Paws and Claws! We have lots of exciting learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom which we know the children will love.

The children will look at pets and animals that live in the sea, on land and in the air. They will learn how to care for animals and will understand the role of a Vet. High-quality texts will be used, such as ‘Mog and the Vee-Eee-Tee’, Walking through the Jungle, and Hairy Maclary, which will be used as a vehicle to support learning with lots of exciting Rainbow Challenges created in the learning environments. In maths, we will develop our understanding of shapes and numbers, looking closely at addition and subtraction, sharing and grouping, and odd and even numbers.

We will also go on our first school trip to Tilgate Park, which will include a coach ride!

Additionally, we will begin to think about the transition into Year 1. This will involve talking about our emotions and how we feel about the change. It is very exciting in Year 1, but it may be slightly different. There will be opportunities to visit the Year 1 classrooms and spend time in there.

Finally, we will have the opportunity to share all our wonderful learning with you by celebrating our journey through reception and all of our achievements!
