Art and Design

Below you will find the statement of intent and the subject overview.

Art at Eastbrook

“Every child is an artist.”

Pablo Picasso

At Eastbrook, we aim to stimulate creativity and imagination in our art lessons. Art provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences as a way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel, and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. They learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists. We give children the opportunity to work alongside artists and other adults as well as visits to experience the work of professional artists. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. Throughout the year, all children have the opportunity to participate in a variety of art competitions.

By the end of year 6, we aim for each child to:

  • Appreciate different styles of art.
  • Have experience seeing in person great works of art.
  • Have knowledge of a range of important artists across the ages.
  • Be confident using a variety of different materials, tools and techniques.
  • Experience having their own artwork displayed in public.

Core Eastbrook Learning Value: Composure

Taking time to appreciate all forms of art and to enjoy the sense of well-being that it gives us.
